For round five the series headed back to Anaheim for the final time this year. Despite being a bit overcast the weather was warm and it looked like racing conditions would be near perfect for the evening. However just before the main events, temperatures began to drop and rain began to fall, making a already slick track even more difficult.
Practice
The 450 practices had most of the regulars up front in laps times. James Stewart set the fastest lap in timed practice, second fastest was Ryan Villopoto. Josh Grant surprised everyone by posting the third fastest time with Davi Millsaps posting the fourth fastest.
For the 250’s Eli Tomac posted the fastest time, Ken Roczen was second, and Rockstar Energy Racing’s Jason Anderson was third.
While Tomac looked strong and ready to bounce back from last weeks upset in the 250’s, Villopoto also appeared to be ready to close the points gap in the 450 class.
250 SX Heat 1
ONE Industries sponsored privateer Trevor Reis nearly grabbed the holeshot, but was edged out by Martin Davalos. Jessy Nelson, Christian Craig, and Ken Roczen were all right behind Reis. Reis would tangle on the first lap with Craig and go down, getting up in last place. Craig would pass Nelson for second, and then go down shortly after. Martin Davalos would take the checkers with Roczen close behind.
250 SX Heat2
Eli Tomac and Zach Osborne would come through turn one side-by-side with Joey Savatgy right behind them. Malcolm Stewart would go down hard as he headed in to turn 3 causing another crash. ONE sponsored Jason Anderson would narrowly avoid both pile-ups and move up to fifth. Savatgy would put a surprising pass on Osborne and take over second. Anderson would pass Cachia and move into third. Anderson would begin to pressure Savatgy for second, but they would collide and Anderson would go down. Tomac would take the win with Savatgy in second and Anderson in third.
450 heat 1
Rockstar Energy Racing and ONE sponsored rider Davi Millsaps fired out of the gate for the holeshot followed by Barcia, Lamay, Nicoletti, and Kiniry. Andrew short moved into third with Reed in fourth. Reed would pass Short and take over third position. Millsaps won with Barcia coming in second, and Reed in third.
450 Heat 2
ONE Industries sponsored rider Just Brayton would be first through turn one in his new Defcon TXT1 gear, he was immediately overcome by his teammate Josh Grant. With two laps to go Brayton would set his teammate up and make a strong pass for first. Brayton would hold on for the win. Josh Grant would take second followed by James Stewart, Trey Canard, Mike Alessi, Chris Blose, Kyle Chisholm, Broc Tickle, and Vince Friese.
250 LCQ
Dillon Epstein would squeeze inside of Chris Plouffe for the holeshot.
On Lap two Zach Osborne would make his way around Plouffe and Epstein to take over the lead. Christian Craig began to pressure Plouffe causing Plouffe to go down handing the last transfer spot to Craig. Osborne and Craig would go on to the main.
450 LCQ
Bobby Kiniry took the holeshot but was hit by Les Smith. Smith and Kiniry would go down causing a huge pileup. Phil Nicoletti and Jimmy Albertson managed to avoid the carnage and moved up to first and second.
Dungey got caught up in the in the crash, but would charge all the way up to third. On the last lap Nicoletti would make a mistake allowing Albertson and Dungey by him. Albertson was able to hold Dungey off and take the win.
KJSC
Slade Varola took the win in the 1st race of the returning KJSC series sporting his Youth Atom Labyrinth Helmet.
250 Main
The Rookie Joey Savatgy would take the holeshot. Ken Roczen, Martin Davalos, and Travis Baker were close behind. Rockstar Energy Racing and ONE Sponsored rider Jason Anderson would start the race in about 9th place. Ken Roczen would make a pass on the 1st lap get by Savatgy to take over the lead. Jason Anderson would make a mistake and go down, loosing quite a few places. As the riders completed lap one, the running order was Roczen, Savatgy, Davalos, Baker, Osborne, Cachia, Seely, Tomac, Cunningham, Ramos, Politelli, Nelson, Anstie, Champion, Craig, and Jason Anderson in 16th. Seely and Tomac would exchange passes and begin to close on Baker for fourth. Tomac would finally overtake Seely and Baker and Savatgy soon after. With three laps to go Anderson had charged from 16th all the up to 6th. Ken Roczen would remain up front to take another win with Davalos taking second. ONE Rider Jason Anderson would finish in 5th putting him 5th in the points for the 250 West coast.
450 Main
Despite the rain starting to fall and making an already difficult track slick, ONE Sponsored Justin Brayton launched to the front of the pack and grabbed the holeshot. Mike Alessi, Ryan Villopoto, Chad Reed, and Ryan Dungey were all close behind. Chad Reed would make a mistake trying to pass for the lead and end up taking Brayton down. Brayton would get up in last place to attempt to chase down the pack. At the end of lap one it was Alessi with the lead followed by Ryan Dungey, Trey Canard, Davi Millsaps, and James Stewart. Millsaps and Stewart would move past Canard and take over the third and fourth positions. On Lap two Dungey made the pass for the lead on Alessi. Millsaps went for the pass on Alessi also, but was almost taken out by Alessi as he drifted into Millsaps lane through a rhythm section. Alessi would end up going down allowing Millsaps to take over second place. Millsaps would make a mistake at the beginning of lap five allowing Stewart to close in. Stewart would make a pass on Millsaps on Lap 7 to take over second place. At the halfway point Barcia had reeled in Millsaps. At the end of lap 6 Millsaps would make a move and pass Stewart. With only three laps to go, Stewart would make a mistake and Barcia would go by into third. Dungey would hold on to the lead for his first win of the season. Davi Millsaps would hold on to second and extend his point’s lead to 14. Justin Brayton would fight from last place back up to tenth for the night.
