Race Report: Millville

Home Sweet Home for Dungey at Millville!

Ryan Dungey currently resides in Tallahassee Florida and trains with Ricky Carmichael at his private facility but his roots are in Minnesota. Dungey raced as an amateur at the Spring Creek facility for many years and has always called Millville his “Home” track. This past weekend reminded me of the dominant displays that Dungey’s training partner Ricky Carmichael used to pull off on his Suzuki just a few seasons ago.

Kevin Windham has joined the Red-Bull / Honda factory team for the remainder of the 2010 season and didn’t waste any time making his presence known. Windham grabbed the hole-shot in the first moto and lead until about the half way point before being over taken by Dungey. Josh Grant , Andrew Short and Ben Townley also made their way past Windham and battled until the end of the moto. ONE Industries team rider Tommy Hahn also made his return to racing at Millville and captured a solid sixth place in moto one behind Dungey, Grant, Short, Townley and Windham.

The reigning 450 class champion Chad Reed dropped out of the first moto and did not ride the second moto suffering from a sore neck. In practice Chad over jumped a section of the course and strained his neck. He tried to race but was unable to compete. Hopefully Chad will be able to race next week at Washougal.

The second moto for the 450 class in Millville started with Andrew Short grabbing the holeshot ahead of Lucas Oil’s Ben Townley and Ryan Dungey. Ben Townley quickly made his way past Short and lead until he lost the front end on the second lap handing the lead to local hero Ryan Dungey. Dungey quickly began to stretch the margin over Short, Townley, Windham, Kyle Regal, and ONE Industries rider Tommy Hahn. The surprise ride of the day belonged to privateer rider Kyle Regal. Regal finished a solid eigth place in moto one but showed his fitness in moto two by battling his way all the way to second place. Regal at one point had worked his way past Windham but found himself on the ground. The Privateer Honda rider re-mounted and caught the field again and turned the second fastest lap times to Ryan Dungey as he worked his way past the factory team riders. ONE Industries rider Tommy Hahn suffered a mechanical issue with his motorcycle and had to give up any hopes of a podium finish in Minnesota.

At the end of the day Ryan Dungey claimed first over-all with 1-1 moto scores ahead of Andrew Short via 3-3 moto scores and Kyle Regal claimed the final spot on the podium with 8-2 moto scores. Windham and Townley rounded out the top five over-all positions.

The 250 class has seen five different winners in the first six rounds so Millville would test the riders to see who would be ready to take over for the second half of the season. Moto one saw Martin Davalos jump out to an early lead ahead of Trey Canard and Christophe Pourcel. Davalos would only lead for a short while due to a crash that set him way back. Trey Canard took over the lead and looked to be the strongest in the class but soon found himself in a battle with Christophe Pourcel. The two riders traded the lead position several times before Pourcel was able to claim the win. Canard finished the moto second ahead of Jake Weimer, Tyla Rattray and Blake Wharton. Christophe Pourcel was completely drained after the first moto win.

The second moto in the 250 class saw Nico Izzi, Trey Canard and Dean Wilson at the front of the pack. The current points leader and first moto winner Christophe Pourcel was stuck back in the pack and would never be able to work his way to the front and eventually settled for a tenth place moto finish. Trey Canard showed that he has the fitness to match his talent and was able to claim the second moto win in a moto that started in the hot sun but finished in a heavy rain shower. Pro-Circuit Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson finished second ahead of Geico Powersports rider Justin Barcia and Monster Energy-ProCircuit Kawasaki’s Tyla Rattray.

At the end of the day Trey Canard claimed his second over-all of the season with 2-1 moto scores. Dean Wilson finished second with 4-2 moto scores and Tyla Rattray claimed the final spot on the podium with 4-4 scores. Jake Weimer and Christophe Pourcel rounded out the top five at Millville.

The series moves to Washington State next week and should give the riders a little break from the blistering heat that they have seen these past few rounds. Check back here next week for a full report from Washougal.
