Race Report: Las Vegas

2011 was a season to remember and will go down in the history books as one of the most competitive and exciting series of racing ever.  Las Vegas played host to the season finale and the intense racing continued all the way through the final laps.  At the end of the night three new champions were crowned.

The East Coast Lites Main Event was the first race to go off.   Although Justin Barcia had all but wrapped up the title, he still needed to finish in Vegas to secure the final championship points.  Barcia got the holeshot, but went down early and lost two positions to Sipes and Baggett.  He was able to remount quickly and maintain third position while Sipes and Baggett battled for the lead.  As the race neared the final laps, Baggett put on a charge and made his way past Sipes to take the win.  Sipes held onto second and Barcia rounded out the podium and won the Lites East Championship.

German rookie sensation Ken Roczen grabbed the holeshot in the West Coast Lites Main Event and ran away to an early lead.  He later went down and dropped to second behind Cole Seely.  Roczen regained the lead after Seely crashed and went on to win his first Supercross.  Meanwhile, the real race was between Broc Tickle and Eli Tomac for the title.  Tomac needed to finish ahead of Tickle to secure enough points for the championship.  There was a train of riders wheel to wheel which included Seely, Tickle, Tomac and Cunningham for the second through fifth positions. Tomac was in the mix and was ahead of Tickle for part of the race before he was overtaken in the closing laps by both Tickle and Cunningham.  Tomac went on to finish fourth while Tickle grabbed second in the race and the overall championship for the west coast.

Kevin Windham set the fastest lap time in qualifying practice and led the main event after passing Mike Alessi who got the holeshot.  It looked as if Windham could take his first win of the season until James Stewart started to challenge him.  Stewart was able to get by, but K-Dub stayed close behind which ended up costing him when Stewart went over bars in the whoops and Kevin had nowhere to go.  Both riders went down giving Ryan Villopoto the lead.  Chad Reed closed in and was able to get by RV2 while Ryan Dungey put on a late race charge.  Dungey fought past Villopoto and pressured Reed for the lead all the way to the end.  Reed held onto first followed by Dungey.  Ryan Villopoto maintained third and earned enough points to become the 2011 Supercross Champion.  ONE's Chris Blose put in a solid ride and finished a season best fourth place.

As the official graphics sponsor of Monster Kawasaki and Geico Honda, ONE Industries proudly won two championships this season.  Congratulations to Ryan Villopto, Justin Barcia, and all the riders and teams on an amazing season!
